Battery Directive

Battery Directive (2006/66/EC)

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Batteries and Accumulators (Battery) Directive has been passed into law by the European Union (EC). Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators (as amended by Directive 2013/56/EU) (hereinafter called “the Directive”) contains several requirements specific to batteries. The Directive affects manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment whose products containing batteries and accumulators containing cadmium and mercury. The Directive places strict limits on the use of these materials, requires a “crossed out wheeled bin” symbol to appear on battery or packaging and calls for participation in collection scheme in products sold in the European Union.

The Directive requires producers (manufacturers, distributors, and sellers) to:

  • Register with the Battery Regulating authority within each member state
  • Join a recovery and recycling scheme. Timing is specific to each member state.

NETGEAR Inc. is currently working with our suppliers, distributors, partners, and customers to ensure NETGEAR complies with the Battery Directive.
